The NYC Mixer at Columbia University was a huge success! Thank you for all the people who came out to attend. Special thanks to our co-hosts, Columbia’s Asian American Alliance and Taiwanese American Student Association, NYU’s Taiwanese American Student Society, and New York City Asian American Student Conference who helped us.

1) ECAASU Campus Ambassador

The ambassador position is to help ECAASU build up a network across the East Coast amongst student leaders and provide an opportunity for people to step up and be active community members in the East Coast region. In a way, it is very similar to a publicity position, in which we hope the ambassador will help us spread news about ECAASU and its events (Fall Campus Tour, Spring Conference, etc.) to your campus community. If you would like to join the program and/or work on new ideas for the program, check this out.

2) ECAASU Trailblazer Award: Do you know a student who is paving the way for activism and advocacy in the Asian Pacific American community?

The ECAASU National Board is soliciting nominations for students who inspire, educate and empower those interested in Asian American & Pacific Islander American issues. As a new initiative to honor those who whose work fits with our mission and goals, ECAASU has created the ECAASU Trailblazer Award to recognize those students who have significantly impacted his or her community. Every two weeks leading up to the ECAASU 2012 Student Conference at Duke University, a Trailblazer Award nominee will be chosen by the ECAASU National Board as a finalist. At the ECAASU 2012 Conference, all the finalists will be recognized at a reception and the winner for ECAASU’s Trailblazer Award will be chosen. The winner of the Trailblazer Award will be recognized at the reception and win a scholarship of an amount to be determined to further his or her education or career aspirations.

3) ECAASU Campus Mixer Coming to a City Near You!

Our first mixer of the year in NYC was a great success. Come join ECAASU and fellow student leaders at our next stop at the University of Connecticut! There are 5 destinations left including Philly, Hartford, Boston, Atlanta, and Florida. If you are a student activist, love to meet new people and want to collaborate with others from your community this is the event for you! 4) ECAASU Advocacy Fact Sheet: Domestic Violence

The ECAASU Advocacy team has compiled this fact sheet for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in an effort to bring put together facts for organizations to use or distribute as well as for our readers to read. To look at the fact sheet, please click here.

5) Official ECAASU Statement about the death of Private Danny Chen
The statement can be found here. In support of Private Danny Chen and his family, ECAASU is collecting letters from students and community members. The letters will be compiled and sent to Secretary of the Army John McHugh. Please e-mail your letters to the National Chair of Advocacy, Diane Wong at diane.wong@ecaasu.org. 6) A Discussion of Asian America’s Challenges on the Path to Higher Education
Date: Oct 25, 2011, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, at Pless Hall, Steinhardt School of Education, New York University (82 Washington Square East at University Place)
 The goal of the event is to increase understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by immigrant Asian Pacific American public school students interested in pursuing higher education. We intend to bring together the experiences of Asian Pacific American youth, spoken in their own words and the insight of activists, service providers and public servants to encourage a well-rounded discussion of the issue at hand. Through this conversation, we hope to bring to light not only the challenges facing Asian and Asian Pacific American youth but also the strengths and ambitions that they bring to the table.

7) Organization of Chinese Americans: APIA U Spring 2012 Application
Deadline: November 4th, 2011
OCA is extending the APIA U: Leadership 101 Training Host Application deadline to November 4, 2011. This one day leadership training program provides an opportunity for students to network and meet other Asian Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs) in their region while focusing on the development of leadership and organizational skills that are relevant to the APIA campuses and community.  We encourage universities and colleges who have not hosted the program to apply now.

We are currently looking to fill the Spring 2012 season (January – May). This is a great opportunity for your school to become involved.  If you would like to bring this unique program to your school, please fill out the application by November 4 , 2011.

9) Page Turner: Literary Festival by Asian American Writers’ Workshop
Date: Oct 29 at Powerhouse Arena, 37 Main Street, Brooklyn

PAGE TURNER is the literary festival curated by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. We have an incredible line-up: Junot Diaz, Jessica Hagedorn, Amitav Ghosh, Jayne Anne Phillips, Minjin Lee, Hisham Matar, Danielle Evans, Hari Kunzru, Teju Cole, Mark Nowak, and many others–including TV chef (and nemesis-of-David-Chang) Eddie Huang, who will DJ our after party. We’re going to have Korean taco trucks, policy wonks, and stand-up comedians. Please mark your calendar for October 29, 2011 at powerHouse books. More details here.

10) OCA Hiring Development Manager Position: Events and Special Projects
Headquartered in the nation’s capital, OCA, a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), is seeking to fill a Development Manager position. OCA represents over 80 chapters and affiliates across the United States and embraces the hopes and aspirations of APAs.

THE POSITION:  Reporting to the Director of Development, the ideal candidate will have significant work experience in all phases of special events planning including but not limited to development of event work order, budget, marketing plan, negotiation with vendors, risk management and assessing for staffing needs. Other essential professional requisites include excellent oral and written communication, project/program management (both on and off site), ability to work independently with minimum supervision and strong interpersonal skills including supervision of staff and volunteers.

11) APIASF Scholarship Application 2012-2013
Date: Nov 11th-13th, 2011
Washington, D.C., October 6, 2011–The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF), the nation’s largest nonprofit organization devoted to providing college scholarships for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), announced today that it is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 scholarship cycle. Scholarships will provide the critical scholarship support that many AAPI students need to pursue higher education and access APIASF’s programs and services. During the 2011-2012 scholarship cycle, APIASF awarded more than $1.2 million to over 500 students in 43 states, in the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and American Samoa. APIASF also welcomed its new cohort of Gates Millennium Scholars who hailed from across the country and Pacific Islands. For more information click here.

12) Harvard Kennedy School- Public Policy and Leadership Conference
Date and Location:  February 23-26, 2012 at Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts
The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University is pleased to announce the Twelfth Annual Harvard Public Policy and Leadership Conference (PPLC). The PPLC is for first and second year undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in public service. Conference eligibility is students who are interested in pursuing careers in public service. Conference eligibility is limited to college freshman and sophomores who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Once accepted, conference participants will receive free travel and room and board. The application for the PPLC is due November 18, 2011. The online application can be viewed here.
