Racial Slur used by ESPN after Knick’s Loss Against Hornets
From the SFGate: ESPN Sorry for Offensive Headline on Lin Story
ESPN ran the headline “Chink in the Armor” after Lin had nine turnovers in New York’s loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night on its mobile website that could be seen on phones and tablet computers.
Though the statement was removed 35 minutes after it was posted, the damage was already done and ESPN issued an apology to the public and said the proper disciplinary action would be taken.
Rising Knicks star Jeremy Lin continues to gain momentum and popularity despite the Knick’s loss last night to the North Carolina Hornets [85-89]. A number of websites have sprung up featuring Lin and a number of puns like “Linsanity”, “Lincredible” and “Lin it to Win it”. Despite rough obstacles, Lin continues to climb the charts and we’ll see how the Knicks fare against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday!
ECAASU featured on Philanthroper: $1 Can Change The World
If you hadn’t heard, it’s an election year.
And no matter your political affiliation, we can all agree that for a democracy to represent its constituents, we all need to participate.
The East Coast Asian American Student Union is the largest, longest-running Asian American student organization in the nation. Through their strong presence on college campuses, they keep dialogs going to fight prejudice. They also encourage Asian Americans to get involved in the electoral process.
“During election years, we do a lot of voter registration drives,” says the ECAASU’s Ada Chen. “We try to make sure that for every campus that we’re connected to or have a loose relationship with, we get something going there saying, ‘Hey, you can register to vote! Even if you aren’t home, you can vote!’”
In the ECAASU’s case, it’s a particularly salient point. Chen explains that for many first generation Asian American students, they may be coming from immigrant families who’ve never voted in the past.
And if a student doesn’t vote? Who can imagine them ever having a larger voice in public policy?
“We’re trying to encourage people to realize that hey have the power to make a difference. Hopefully, we’ll get more representation in the national government,” says Chen. “Obviously every person we register to vote isn’t going to run for office, but it’s definitely a really good first step, showing them, this is how the electoral proces works.”
Philanthroper is an online web site that shares the stories of non-profit 501(c)3 organizations everyday. ECAASU has been featured on Philanthroper in hopes of mobilizing young Asian Americans to take a stand, vote and change the world around them. It’s not too late! Your contributions can really make a difference and help us continue to do the work that we do. Please take the time to visit this site and contribute to the cause. Every dollar counts. Donate today and make a better tomorrow.

I hope you’re all enjoying it, where ever you are!
Happy Fred Korematsu Day!

Fred Korematsu is a huge civil rights icon. During World War II, when Japanese Americans were moved into incarceration camps, Fred Korematsu refused to go and was arrested for defying government protocols. In 1944, his case reached the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Justices ruled against him, saying that the concentration camps were necessary in the given military situation. Almost 40 years after the case had been closed, evidence was found in government archives stating that there was no justification for Japanese Americans concentration camps. Korematsu’s case was reopened and on November 10, 1983 it was overturned; a major milestone in civil rights history.
California recently passed a bill in 2011 making January 30th Fred Korematsu Day. This is the first day in American Hostiry named after an Asian American! Below is a quote from Fred Korematsu regarding his case:
According to the Supreme Court decision regarding my case, being an American citizen was not enough. They say you have to look like one, otherwise they say you can’t tell a difference between a loyal and a disloyal American. I thought that this decision was wrong and I still feel that way. As long as my record stands in federal court, any American citizen can be held in prison or concentration camps without a trial or a hearing. That is if they look like the enemy of our country. Therefore, I would like to see the government admit that they were wrong and do something about it so this will never happen again to any American citizen of any race, creed or color.
After his conviction was overturned, Korematsu continued to be an activist and spoke about his experiences in many events around the nation. Korematsu passed away in 2005, but his fight and his message carries on. Thank you Mr. Korematsu for such a remarkable story that continues to give us hope.
