As of February 2011 the highest ranking Asian American is Senator and President Pro Tempore Daniel Inouye . He is currently serving his ninth consecutive term as U.S. Senator, the second longest serving U.S. senator in history after Robert Byrd. He has been representing Hawaii continuously since its statehood in 1959 by serving as its first U.S. representative and then senator. Inouye was the first Japanese American to serve in the United States House of Representatives and also the first in the senate. He is also the recipient of the United States Medal of Honor. Inouye will become the longest serving senator in history if he serves until June 29th, 2014.
