The first elected Asian American governor was George R. Ariyoshi. In 1974, the state of Hawaii elected Govenor Ariyoshi into office after the previous governor was declared incapcitated. Historically, Govenor Ariyoshi holds the record as the longest-serving state governor for Hawaii -- which will not likely be broken due to the state’s current term limits. Governor Ariyoshi guided the state through the first economic recession after the post-statehood economic boom came to an end.
