ECAASU stands with Dr. Marc Lamont Hill and Palestine

WASHINGTON, DC- The East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU) stands in firm support of the work that Dr. Marc Lamont Hill has done and continues to do in fighting for Palestinian human rights. As leaders within our AAPI community, we think it is essential to share out some of the resources and truths that have been helpful in our own education on what the fight for a free Palestine means. It is of the utmost importance that we underscore how disgraceful and racist the treatment of Dr. Hill has been, and why this issue should matter to AAPIs.

The first place to look is Dr. Hill’s actual address at the UN. This twenty minute address details observations of the situation of the people of Palestine in a highly compelling and informative way. It is important to listen to this full version of the speech, which has not been cut to advance the political agendas of other parties:

Once you watch this speech, which got Dr. Hill fired from CNN, you can understand how strong the Zionist agenda is. The last ten seconds were the focal point for much of popular media, a few seconds that spoke nothing of the multitudes of truths that Dr. Hill documented, nothing on the violations of human rights, the more than 60 Israeli laws that deny Palestinians to full citizenship simply because they are not Jewish, the random violence against Palestinians by the Israeli state, or the physical and psychological torture of Palestinians within the Israeli criminal “justice” system. And this is just a few moments of systemic brutality that Dr. Hill documents.

The second place to look is Noura Erakat’s The Washington Post article, “Marc Lamont Hill and the legacy of punishing black internationalists.” A Palestinian American human right attorney and fellow academic, Erakat lays out the history of Black-Palestinian solidarity and the suppression of the truth on Palestine by liberal institutions--like popular media and the academy--and our government.

The disposal of Dr. Hill by powerful institutions is not a new narrative for Black and non-Black POCs in the US, and it continues to be horrifically unacceptable. Divide and conquer is an old tactic of imperialist states like the US, which we can only work against by standing and acting together, especially since our AAPI community includes Palestinian, Arab, Brown, and Black folks. We will not let purposeful political miseducation cloud our understanding of justice, human rights, and greater truth.

Other resources to take a look at:

Read Ilhan Omar: Why Advocating for Palestine is Not Anti-Semitic, from Muslim Girl, a media platform that publishes “articles that relate to young modern women all over the globe and kickstart an open honest dialogue about Islam in today’s society.”

Follow and donate to Jewish Voices for Peace.

Their mission is to “work together for peace, social justice, equality, human rights, respect for international law, and a U.S. foreign policy based on these ideals. JVP opposes anti-Jewish, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab bigotry and oppression. JVP seeks an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem; security and self-determination for Israelis and Palestinians; a just solution for Palestinian refugees based on principles established in international law; an end to violence against civilians; and peace and justice for all peoples of the Middle East.”

Learn about the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement which “works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.”

Watch and read about how the Israel lobby increases power in the US through a few clips from the Electronic Antifada on the censored film by news outlet Al Jazeera called “The Lobby - USA.” The Electronic Antifada also works to regularly tell Palestinian stories. Al Jazeera recently released a similar expose on how the Israel lobby influences British politics which you can watch in four parts here.

Hold your politicians accountable based on their relationship with the issue. For example, stay updated on how Rashida Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, advocates for Palestine and plans to lead a delegation to Palestine.

Watch “Omar” (Arabic: عمر‎), a 2013 Palestinian drama film directed by Hany Abu-Assad.

“The $2 million film was funded almost entirely by private Palestinian investors (with some support from Enjazz Fund in the United Arab Emirates), it was directed by a Palestinian citizen of Israel, the actors are Palestinian, and it was filmed in the Palestinian city of Nablus and in Nazareth.” - Ehab Zahriyeh, in their article on Al Jazeera America.
